Writing

Sample writing 1. : Imagine you woke up as an animal and write about your day from that  perspective. What kind of animal are you? What do you see and do throughout the day?

I opened my eyes to the morning sun as a dolphin. When I awoke, all the other dolphins in my pod were already swimming and playing in the ocean. We played games of chase and somersaulted through the waves. For breakfast, my pod and I worked together to herd a big school of fish and we each ate until we were full. In the afternoon, we travelled to a new part of the coral reef and explored all the colourful sea plants and creatures. When the sun started to set, we sang songs as we swam home before resting for the night. It was an exciting day as a dolphin!

Sample writing 2. : Write a letter to your new class pet (hamster, rabbit, fish etc.) introducing yourself and telling them about your classroom. What will you do to take care of them? What do you think they will like best about your class?

Dear Goldfish,

Welcome to our classroom! My name is Tom and I will be taking care of you. I hope you like your new fishbowl home. Our class is learning a lot about animals like you! Each day I will make sure to feed you fish food and change some of the water in your bowl. I think you will enjoy watching us learn and play during the day. Our class pet time is fun - you can meet all my classmates then. I also have other fish at home so I will keep you healthy and happy. I'm glad you're here, Goldfish!

Let me know if you need anything.

Your friend,

Tom

Sample writing 3. : Pretend you can shrink to be as small as an insect. Write about what you would see and experience from that size in your own backyard or neighbourhood park. How would everyday things look different? What might you encounter?

If I could shrink to the size of an ant, everything around me would look so big! Blades of grass that I run through would tower above like trees. When I walked outside, I'd see the particles of dirt and grains of sand on the ground as mountains to climb. I might find a picnic discarded in the park that I could treat like a feast, crawling through crumbs and tasting morsels of food. On the sidewalk, I'd have to be careful not to get trapped in cracks between the concrete slabs. I'd probably come across industrious ants carrying food back to their anthill homes. Birds might swoop down trying to eat me! It would be an exciting adventure exploring my neighbourhood from such a tiny perspective. I'd have to be quick and clever to avoid getting stepped on.
